Up From the Deep: The Return
Author: J.T. McDaniel

Centered on the USS Growler (SSG-577), Up From the Deep: The Return, is a fascinating history of the Regulus missile submarines and their crews. Of the five Regulus boats, only one, Halibut (SSGN-587), had the benefit of nuclear power. Two, Tunny (SSG-282) and Barbero (SSG-317), conducted war patrols in World War II (years before they were converted to missile boats, obviously). Growler and Grayback (SSG-574) were converted from Tang class fast attack boats to carry the Regulus missile during construction.

Author Robert K. Harmuth served (and originally qualified) in Growler.
