 Notebooks/ Maru

I'm looing for two bits of information:

1)I remember reading that, to qualify in submarines, officers had to complete a detailed notebook covering the various systems on the boat. Did this apply to enlisted men as well?

2) Most Japanese merchant ship names ended in "Maru" (i.e., "Tonan Maru"). What does "Maru" translate to in English?
