 Watch, Quarter and Stations

I am curious, how does the watches/quarter system worked on US Fleet boats? As I understand, a person would hold 1 4hr watch, then "rest" (sleep, relax, minor tasks) for 8 hours. So they would be on duty for 8 hrs a day.

Did it happen that a person would have two different jobs for the two watches? For example, I read about a sonarman also doing surface watch. Is that common?


Also, what happens on General Quarters/Battle Stations? Is there a common practice?

For example what would Torpedomen that are off duty do during GQ?

And what tasks do AA or Deck gun personnel normally do during Non-BS/Normal Watch standing?
