 Submarine off of Oki. and Iwo

Hello. This is my first post here. My father is a WWII veteran who was stationed in Hawaii. He was on a submarine off of both Okinawa and Iwo Jima a few weeks before the invasions. However, I am having trouble locating people who can give me information about it. At a reunion, I was with my Dad when he shared the story of how at Okinawa, they had to surface because of technical problems. He broke katakana code. They transfered to a ship at that time. Kamikaze's littered the skies and he lost a good friend there. At the reunion, one man remembered seeing a submarine on the surface. He said he and some other men said they couldn't believe their eyes.

I am writing a book based on his experience and his 400+ pages of letters he wrote to his "folks" during the war. It doesnt' look like this message board is too active, but I thought I'd give it a try anyway.
