The schnorkel was first fitted to a Dutch submarine prior to WWII, if my memory serves me at all.

During WWII the German Navy developed the system, and by late war was deploying U-Boats with schnorkels. Unfortunately for them, it came too late, and was detectable by radar (airborne).

The device was fitted to US Navy submarines after the end of WWII, and was the norm for USN diesel electric boats in the 1950's until they were all retired from service.

Operating with a schnorkel was no picnic, and most of us recall the head valve closing and opening due to wave action, which led to ambient pressure changes within the boat. Awful on sinuses and eardrums.
