I'd add that, using the split image concept, the main difference is that the two images are superimposed, so that one stays stationary (and, for want of a better term, more solid) and the other moves up and down on top of it and is essentially transparent. For a ship, place the waterline of the moving image on the tip of the masthead of the solid image, and the stadimeter measures the angle between the two waterlines and calculates the range.
