 Re: compressed air

The compressors could produce 3,000 psi, which was used in the high pressure air system. This was normally reduced to a lower pressure for actual use. All of the air systems except the 10-pound system drew their air, via reduction valves, from the 3,000 psi air stored in the air banks. The 10-pound system was supplied by a Roots type turbo blower, which drew directly from internal air and so could only be used when the boat was surfaced and could replenish the air supply. A Roots type compressor is the same basic design used in the supercharger on a racing car.

The main ballast tanks were blown using the 600 pound system. Normally, blowing would be secured once the boat was on the way up. Once the boat was on the surface blowing was completed using the 10 pound system to bring the boat up to full surface trim. This saved the air in the air banks, which would have to be replenished with the 3,000 pound pumps. The less air used for blowing, the less time it would take to restore the supply.

For a much fuller look at the air system, look at the bottom of the technology page, where there is a link to the set of manuals hosted at maritime.org.
