There were ready-use ammo lockers built into the fairwater. Some early Gatos also had torpedo storage located there, though that was abandoned early on and the lockers used for other purposes. A hit on either of these could potentially detonate the shells or warhead, with the obvious disastrous results.

Early Gatos also had a door in the after bulkhead of the conning tower, which was used by the gun crew. This was removed later in the war, but Grunion probably still had hers at the time of loss. Even a small shell coming through that door as it was opened could do plenty of damage.

Grunion's deck gun was mounted aft, so a battle surface stern-to would be normal in a gun action.
