I seem to remember from ana elctricity class I took about 30 years ago that there is some specific reason why a single battery cell is around 1.5V output (+/- depending on such factors as internal resistance). Thus, if you were to open up one of the square 9-V batteries, you'll actually find a stack of 6 1.5V cells inside. As to the Soviets...they had their own methods of doing things. But a 2V cell seems unlikely. Probably 1.5V, either misunderstod by the author or simplified out of slight lack of knowledge.
