Yes, I think you'd need a motor-generator set about the size of one of the main engines to provide AC main propulsion power, and you'd lose way too much battery power in the process of generating the AC. As I understand it, the Navy did use AC main drive motors in some battleships, using turbo electric drive systems. No power storage problems involved with that, of course. A lot of DEs were built using virtually identical propulsion systems to fleet boats, and others with turbines driving the generators. I suppose you could put an AC turbo electric system in a nuclear boat, but you'd still need a DC backup system in case of reactor or turbine problems.
