Four DC motors, each drawing 2300 amps at 415 volts, or a total of 9200 amps is the fleet boat drive. To meet that demand with AC is one hell of a motor-generator set.

Interesting note about the DE's, one of our irrigation districts here in California has a engine and generator combination from a DE, as an emergency power supply.

They roll the big engine with power from a General Electric gasoline engine and generator. It has an external valve train and rockers, and oil cups to lubricate the engine. Apparently one other is known to exist, and it is in the Smithsonian.
